Since 2009, VCDS has organized an annual Science Exhibition for students from its non-formal schools. In previous years, the event was held in collaboration with public schools, but this year it was not possible, so the exhibitions took place directly in VCDS’s own non-formal schools. The goal of the initiative is to allow children to carry out a variety of scientific experiments and present them during a special exhibition day.
The experiments showcased are as creative as they are educational. Some students demonstrated the difference in density between fresh water and salt water by showing how an egg floats more easily in the latter. Others explored the importance of oxygen for fire by placing a container over a lit candle. Younger participants illustrated that air has weight using a simple balance made of two balloons, one inflated and one not. A few even chose to present the medicinal properties of certain plants, linking scientific curiosity to traditional knowledge.
At the end of each exhibition, VCDS representatives voted for the best experiment. The selection was based on the clarity of explanations, the usefulness of the project, and its visual presentation.
Despite the logistical challenges faced this year, the Science Exhibitions were once again a great success. The students showed remarkable ingenuity and determination in bringing their projects to life, with strong guidance from their teachers. Beyond the scientific lessons, the experience helped them develop creativity, teamwork, and adaptability. For some, it was an opportunity to overcome shyness and speak confidently in front of an audience.
